Getting There

Most visitors catch the Cal Mac Ferry from Oban to Craignure (alternatively you can use the Fishnish to Lochaline crossing which is cheaper and a quicker crossing, but requires a longer drive for most people). If using the Oban- Craignure crossing, book early as weekend crossings can be very busy especially in the summer months.

Once on the Island, turn right and head for Salen on the A849. In Salen follow signs for Ulva Ferry (initially the B8035 then B 8073), which will take you across the Island and along Loch Na Kael (with nice views of Ben More and Eorsa Island). Continue on the B 8073 beyond Ulva Ferry for a further 7 miles or so. Go past the right hand turn to Dervaig, and continue along the road taking care on the two sets of sharp turns on a hill about a mile and a half beyond the Dervaig road. Tostarie is the second turning on the right at the top of the hill (ignore the first turning for Tostary).

The journey from the Craignure ferry terminal to Tostarie takes between 60 and 75 minutes for most people

The post code is PA74 6NH for visitors with satnav, and the turning for Tostarie is marked by a post box/ egg sale box like this:

If this is your first trip to Mull here are a few observations- ignore the below if you know all this already:

  • It is important that you book the ferry crossing from Oban – Craignure (if you haven’t already done so) since the ferries are often busy during the summer and at Easter – especially at the weekends
  • Mull is mostly single track roads so reversing skills are useful
  • The nearest petrol stations to Tostarie are at (1) Salen (you will pass through this village mid way between the Ferry terminal at Craignure and the house), Salen is about 16 miles from the house (2) Tobermory (also approximately 16 miles from the house). So it pays to keep an eye on the petrol gauge as its a pain if you run dry
  • The nearest shops are at Salen or Dervaig (8 miles away) so the same applies for milk and bread etc
